Why in news?

A Bengaluru woman was duped of ₹7 lakh by cybercriminals who lured her with online job offers and then used her to open multiple bank accounts for illegal transactions.

Key points

  1. Individuals are being targeted with fake online job offers promising high salaries.
  2. Scammers demand upfront fees for processing, training, or account setup.
  3. Victims are then coerced into opening bank accounts, which are used as 'mule accounts' for laundering illicit funds.
  4. These mule accounts facilitate cybercrime activities, including financial fraud and illegal transfers.
  5. The police are investigating the racket involving individuals from Uttar Pradesh.

Background & context

Online job scams are a growing concern, exploiting individuals seeking employment. Mule accounts are a common method used by cybercriminals to disguise the origin of funds from illegal activities. These accounts are typically opened by individuals who are either unaware of the illegal nature of the transactions or are coerced/deceived into participating.

★ Prelims fact capsule

Mule accounts are bank accounts used by criminals to launder money obtained from illegal activities.

Why in news?

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected a deficient monsoon for India, with an 84% chance of below-normal rainfall nationally, largely attributed to El Niño conditions.

Key points

  1. The Southwest monsoon onset over Kerala was delayed this year (June 4) compared to the normal date (June 1).
  2. The IMD's long-range forecast projects rainfall at 90% of the Long Period Average (LPA), with a significant chance of it being deficient.
  3. El Niño conditions, indicated by sea surface temperatures above the 0.5 threshold, are a major contributing factor.
  4. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema are particularly expected to receive below-normal rainfall.
  5. Rains in Mumbai, though providing relief from heat, have not significantly advanced the monsoon along the west coast yet.

Background & context

El Niño is a climate pattern characterized by unusually warm surface waters in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. It often disrupts global weather patterns, typically leading to weaker monsoons in India, which are crucial for agriculture and water security. The LPA is the average rainfall over a 30-year period.

★ Prelims fact capsule

El Niño is associated with warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.

Why in news?

Tata Power is seeking a distribution license in Karnataka, challenging the existing monopoly of state-run Escoms and potentially introducing consumer choice in electricity supply.

Key points

  1. Currently, Karnataka's electricity supply is managed by geographical Escoms (e.g., Bescom, CESC) with no consumer choice.
  2. Tata Power Company Limited (TPCL) has applied to the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) for a distribution license.
  3. If granted, TPCL plans to serve over 1.86 lakh consumers within Bescom limits in three years.
  4. Supporters believe this will bring 'choice' and 'efficiency' to consumers.
  5. This move faces strong opposition from state-wide unions who threaten agitations and legal action.

Background & context

The electricity sector in India has undergone reforms, moving towards unbundling generation, transmission, and distribution. However, in many states, distribution remains largely monopolistic. Introducing competition in distribution is seen as a way to improve service quality and efficiency, but it can also lead to complexities in infrastructure management and regulatory challenges.

★ Prelims fact capsule

Escoms (Electricity Supply Companies) are the designated state-owned or state-managed entities responsible for electricity distribution in specific geographical areas in Karnataka.
